Strong bones support an active life at every age, and bone health is built over many years. This page describes the nutritional support I commonly use to support healthy bones alongside exercise and a balanced diet.
Quick answers
Which nutrients matter for bone besides calcium?
Vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium, potassium and protein all play a part in bone remodeling.
Why is vitamin K2 included?
Vitamin K2 activates proteins that help direct calcium into bone, and it works together with vitamin D.
Does exercise matter for bones?
Yes. Weight-bearing and resistance exercise send signals that support bone building.

The mechanisms this protocol supports
Bone is living tissue that is constantly being remodeled, with osteoblasts building new bone and osteoclasts breaking down old bone. Calcium gets most of the attention, but bone also depends on vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium, potassium, protein and regular weight-bearing exercise.
Inflammatory signaling and the gut microbiome also influence the balance between bone building and bone breakdown, which is why this protocol includes omega-3 fats, curcumin, quercetin and a probiotic alongside bone minerals.
Research has linked hormone changes around menopause, low vitamin D status, chronic inflammation and inactivity with lower bone density. That is why it helps to look at the whole picture with your provider.
What is in the protocol
The exact products and directions are listed in the Fullscript plan, and here is what each one is commonly used to support.
Bone Builder from Metagenics is built around microcrystalline hydroxyapatite, a whole-bone mineral complex that provides calcium, phosphorus and other naturally occurring bone minerals. Vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption from the gut, and a combined D3 and K2 product adds vitamin K2, which helps activate proteins that direct calcium into bone. Magnesium Glycinate provides a gentle, well-absorbed form of magnesium, a mineral that is part of the bone matrix and is needed to activate vitamin D. Potassium Citrate provides an alkaline form of potassium, and research has linked higher potassium intake with better calcium balance.
Curcumin Phytosome is a more absorbable form of curcumin from turmeric that is commonly used to support a healthy inflammatory response. OmegAvail fish oil from Ortho Molecular Products provides concentrated EPA and DHA, omega-3 fats that support cell membranes and a balanced inflammatory response. Quercetin is a plant flavonoid that is commonly used to support healthy immune signaling and antioxidant defenses. Pro-Biome 50B from Integrative Therapeutics is a multi-strain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium probiotic with chicory root fiber that supports a balanced gut microbiome. Research on the gut-bone axis suggests the microbiome may influence calcium absorption and bone remodeling.
How to use it thoughtfully
Please talk with your provider before starting, especially if you take medications, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition. This page does not list amounts, so follow the label or the specific guidance your provider gives you. When you can, add one product at a time so it is easier to notice how you feel. Sleep, nourishing food, daily movement and stress care are the foundation, and supplements are meant to build on them.
Vitamin K can interact with blood thinners such as warfarin, so please check with your prescriber before adding it. Potassium supplements are not appropriate with some blood pressure medications and kidney conditions, so please check with your provider first. Ask your provider whether a bone density scan makes sense for you.
Questions to bring to your clinician
These questions can help you get the most out of your next visit.
Do my bone density or lab results suggest I need more than diet and exercise for my bones?
Could any of my current medications or supplements interact with the options discussed here?
Would any lab testing add useful information in my situation, or is it reasonable to start with daily habits?
Which one or two changes would be most worthwhile for me to focus on first?
