How I Work: A Root-Cause Approach to Your Health
I'm Dr. Ryan Kneessi, a licensed naturopathic doctor in Maryland. I combine naturopathic and functional medicine to look for the underlying reasons you don't feel well, then build a personalized plan around you. Functional labs are optional, not required. Most plans are built from your history and my clinical assessment.

Who you will work with
You will work directly with me, Dr. Ryan Kneessi, ND. I hold an active naturopathic doctor license in Maryland, earned my ND from National University of Health Sciences in 2013, and have been practicing since 2014. Read more about me.
What is the root-cause approach?
Instead of only asking "what can we take for this symptom?", I ask "why is this happening?" Fatigue, digestive trouble, hormone shifts, brain fog, and inflammation are often signals that something upstream is out of balance, such as digestion, blood sugar, sleep, stress, nutrient status, or toxin exposure.
Naturopathic medicine gives me the tools to support the body's own healing processes with nutrition, lifestyle, and natural therapies. Functional medicine gives me a systems-based way of connecting the dots between your symptoms. Together they let me build care that fits you, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
Do I have to do functional labs? No.
This is the question I hear most, and it's the reason some people never book. Functional labs are not required to work with me.
For most patients, I create a personalized plan using your health history, symptoms, and my clinical knowledge from more than a decade of practice. Functional labs are a tool, not a requirement. I find them most useful for complicated or complex cases, or when someone isn't progressing the way we expect.
If testing could help, we'll talk it through together, including what it may show, what it costs, and whether it's worth it for you. You always decide. (Labs are only available to patients working 1-on-1 with me.)
What to expect when you work with me
Free 15-Minute Consultation
We start with a short, no-cost call. Tell me what's going on, ask questions, and see whether my approach feels right for you. On the calendar, choose Free Consultation.
New Patient Visit ($395, up to 60 minutes)
This is where I listen to your full health story: your symptoms, history, diet, sleep, stress, medications, and what you've already tried. Please fill out the intake paperwork before your visit. In office or by video.
Your Personalized Plan
Based on my clinical assessment, I build a plan around you. It typically includes nutrition and lifestyle changes plus targeted, professional-grade supplements available through my Fullscript dispensary. Most plans start here, with no labs needed.
Follow-Up Visits ($95, up to 30 minutes), as needed
We check progress, adjust the plan, and decide on next steps together. If your case is complex or isn't responding as expected, we may discuss functional labs at this point, but only if they're truly indicated.
Who this approach is for
People often come to me after being told their labs are "normal" while they still don't feel like themselves. I commonly work with adults who want a natural, whole-person approach to:
- Feeling your best and understanding your lab results, even if nothing specific is wrong
- Digestive concerns like bloating, reflux, IBS-type symptoms, and food sensitivities
- Low energy, fatigue, and stress-related symptoms
- Hormone and thyroid concerns, including perimenopause
- Immune health and ongoing inflammation concerns, as a complement to their medical care
- Cardiometabolic health, blood sugar, and weight management
- Longevity, proactive care, and simply feeling your best
You don't need a formal label or a complicated case to book. If you're not sure whether I can help, that's exactly what the free consultation is for.
