Quick answer
My Fullscript store carries the Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega family, including Ultimate Omega 2X Sport, Minis, D3 Sport, and Plant Based. Nordic lists Ultimate Omega 2X Sport (2,150 mg total omega-3s) and Ultimate Omega Minis (1,120 mg) at 2 soft gels daily with food, or as directed by your healthcare professional. ProOmega 2000, the more concentrated practitioner version, is 2 soft gels daily with food (1,125 mg EPA and 875 mg DHA). Taking fish oil with a meal that contains some fat helps absorption. Ask your provider first if you take blood thinners.
Key takeaways
This guide compares several fish oil formulas that differ in their total omega-3 content and in the balance of EPA and DHA.
The guide discusses taking it with food and easing in gradually as ways people limit fishy burps.
Large trials have shown mixed results for omega-3s, so the right amount often depends on diet, labs and personal goals.
If you have questions about whether omega-3s fits your plan, a short call is a simple place to start.
Omega-3 fish oil is one of the most recommended supplements in practitioner dispensaries. This page covers label dosing, timing with meals, and safety. It is educational information. For who may want to consider omega-3s in the first place, see Who should consider omega-3s (EPA and DHA).

Ultimate Omega vs ProOmega 2000
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega is one of the most searched fish oils. The original Ultimate Omega soft gel (650 mg EPA and 450 mg DHA per 2 soft gels) is not carried on my Fullscript store, but several family members are: Ultimate Omega 2X Sport (2,150 mg total omega-3s per 2 soft gels, NSF Certified for Sport), Ultimate Omega Minis (1,120 mg per 2 half-size soft gels), Ultimate Omega-D3 Sport, and the plant-based versions, including one with D3 and K2. According to the Nordic Naturals ProOmega product guide, ProOmega 2000, the practitioner line, provides 1,125 mg EPA and 875 mg DHA per 2 soft gels and is also on Fullscript. All are in triglyceride form.
Label dosing
For Ultimate Omega 2X Sport, the label says 2 soft gels daily, with food, or as directed by your healthcare professional or pharmacist. For Ultimate Omega Minis, adults take 2 soft gels daily, with food, or as directed by your healthcare professional. For ProOmega 2000, it is 2 soft gels daily, with food, or as directed by your health care professional. For the plant-based and D3 versions, follow the label on the bottle you have.
Timing and absorption
Many people start with 1 soft gel with their largest meal for a few days, then move to the full serving. This is a general description of how the label is often paced, so please follow the plan your own clinician gives you.
Omega-3s are fats, and an early absorption study found EPA and DHA were well absorbed when taken with a higher-fat meal (Lawson 1988). Taking fish oil with food also tends to reduce fishy burps. Splitting the dose between two meals is a common option.
What the research says
In the large VITAL trial, 1 gram a day of marine omega-3s was compared with placebo in adults without heart disease, and the main cardiovascular and cancer outcomes were not significantly different between groups (Manson 2019).
A meta-analysis of large cardiovascular trials found a higher rate of atrial fibrillation with omega-3 supplements, mostly at doses above 1 gram a day (Gencer 2021). This is one reason to talk with your provider about higher doses.
Cautions and who should check with a provider
The label says to consult your physician first if you have a medical condition, take medications including blood thinners, or are allergic to iodine. People with a fish allergy should ask their provider before using fish oil.
If you have a history of heart rhythm problems, ask about dose before starting. Store it away from heat and sunlight, as the label directs.
