Histamine Balance

Table of Contents

Some people notice flushing, headaches, a stuffy nose or gut upset after wine, aged cheese, salami or leftovers, which are all high in histamine. Histamine Balance gathers the products I commonly use to support the breakdown of food histamine and a calm mast cell response, and I want to be honest that the research here is earlier-stage than for most of my other protocols.

The mechanisms this protocol supports

Histamine from food is mainly broken down in the gut by an enzyme called diamine oxidase, or DAO. When DAO activity is low or the histamine load is high, histamine can build up faster than the body clears it.

Mast cells are immune cells that store and release histamine, and their stability is influenced by nutrients such as quercetin and vitamin C. A healthy gut barrier and a balanced microbiome also matter, since some gut bacteria make histamine themselves.

Small studies have linked DAO supplementation with fewer symptoms after histamine-rich meals, and early research has linked quercetin with calmer mast cells. Most of this evidence comes from small or early studies, so this protocol is best used together with a trial of lower-histamine eating.

What is in the protocol

The exact products and directions are listed in the Fullscript plan, and here is what each one is commonly used to support.

  • HistDAO from Xymogen provides diamine oxidase in a tablet designed to release in the small intestine, where it supports the breakdown of food histamine.
  • Quercetin Phytosome from Thorne provides quercetin, a plant flavonoid that has been studied for stabilizing mast cells, in a form designed for better absorption.
  • Buffered Ascorbic Acid from Pure Encapsulations provides a gentle form of vitamin C, which helps the body break down histamine.
  • ProBiota HistaminX from Seeking Health is a probiotic made with Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species chosen to leave out strains known to produce histamine.

How to use it thoughtfully

  • Please talk with your provider before starting, especially if you take medications, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition.
  • This page does not list amounts, so follow the label or the specific guidance your provider gives you.
  • When you can, add one product at a time so it is easier to notice how you feel.
  • Sleep, nourishing food, daily movement and stress care are the foundation, and supplements are meant to build on them.
  • The research on these products is earlier-stage, so please think of this protocol as a careful experiment with your provider.
  • HistDAO is made from pork kidney extract, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or anyone who avoids pork.
  • Quercetin may interact with some medications that are cleared by the liver.
  • Hives with swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing or any sign of a severe allergic reaction needs emergency medical care, not supplements.

Frequently asked questions

Why do leftovers bother some people?

Histamine levels rise as food sits, so leftovers, aged and fermented foods tend to carry more histamine than freshly cooked meals.

How strong is the evidence for this protocol?

The research is earlier-stage and mostly comes from small studies, which is why I recommend pairing it with dietary changes and guidance from a provider.

Do I need an appointment to order these products?

No, you can create a free Fullscript account and order directly, although I always recommend checking with your own provider first, and a free 15-minute consult is available if you would like to talk it through.
