Thyroglobulin Antibodies Test: Autoimmune Thyroid Marker

Table of Contents

Quick answer: Thyroglobulin antibodies target thyroglobulin, the protein the thyroid uses to make and store hormone. Like TPO antibodies, they point to autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto’s or Graves’. They are also checked during thyroid cancer follow-up because they can interfere with thyroglobulin testing. Some healthy people have low levels.

What is Thyroglobulin Antibodies?

Thyroglobulin is a protein made by the thyroid as the building block for T4 and T3. Thyroglobulin antibodies are autoantibodies against it. This marker is part of the Healthspan Assessment panel available to my 1-on-1 patients.

Why Thyroglobulin Antibodies matters

  • Identifies autoimmune thyroid disease
  • Complements TPO antibody testing
  • Used in thyroid cancer monitoring

Understanding your result

Reference ranges vary by lab, age and sex. Your provider interprets your result against the lab’s range and your overall picture, rather than chasing a single number. Functional labs are optional. They can be helpful in more complex cases, and in my practice they are available only to patients working 1-on-1 with me.

What elevated thyroglobulin antibodies can mean

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Graves’ disease
  • Thyroid cancer follow-up
  • Sometimes in healthy people

What affects Thyroglobulin Antibodies

  • Genetics
  • Other autoimmune conditions
  • Iodine intake
  • Pregnancy

Ways to support healthy levels

Thyroglobulin Antibodies and healthy aging

Autoimmune thyroid disease becomes more common with age and reflects shifts in immune regulation and chronic inflammation.

Related thyroid tests: TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, TPO antibodies.
