If you lose taste or smell easily, get every cold that walks by, notice thinning hair, poor wound healing, frequent skin issues, low appetite, or white spots on nails; zinc may be running low.
Zinc is required for immune cell function, skin barrier repair, hormone production (including thyroid and reproductive hormones), and hundreds of enzymes. Sweat, plant-heavy diets without strategy, chronic gut inflammation, and high copper can all tilt the balance.
Serum zinc is imperfect, especially when inflammation is present. I read it alongside alkaline phosphatase, white-count patterns, copper, and the clinical picture; not as a single number.
More is not better. Excess zinc can suppress copper and create a new problem. This is a “test, replete, retest” nutrient, not a forever megadose.
Zinc is one of the reasons “I eat healthy and still get sick every season” is worth investigating instead of shrugging off. Has your sense of taste or smell changed or does every scratch seem to take forever to close? Zinc and copper travel together. Don’t correct one in the dark.
