Quick answer: Your thyroid sets the pace for metabolism, energy and body temperature, and it depends on a handful of minerals and vitamins to do that job. Thyroid Nutrient Support gathers the nutrients the thyroid needs to make and activate its hormones, and it works alongside the care and lab monitoring you get from your provider.
Key takeaways
The thyroid mainly makes T4, which is converted into the more active T3 by enzymes that depend on selenium.
Zinc helps make and convert thyroid hormones, and antioxidant defenses matter because making thyroid hormone creates oxidative stress.
Immune signaling plays a large part in thyroid health, and low vitamin D has been linked with autoimmune thyroid patterns.
The mechanisms this protocol supports
The thyroid mainly makes T4, which is converted into the more active T3 by enzymes that depend on selenium, and zinc is a cofactor for making and converting thyroid hormones. Making thyroid hormone also produces oxidative stress inside the gland, so antioxidant defenses matter.
Immune signaling plays a large role in thyroid health, and research has linked low vitamin D status with autoimmune thyroid patterns in observational studies. Thyroid function and the way the body handles its hormones also tend to shift with age.
Trials have linked selenium with lower thyroid antibody levels, and small trials have linked myo-inositol taken with selenium with healthier TSH and antibody levels. Iron is also needed by the enzyme that makes thyroid hormone, but it is only added when labs show that it is low, so it is not part of this plan.
What is in the protocol
The exact products and directions are listed in the Fullscript plan, and here is what each one is commonly used to support.
- Selenium from Thorne provides selenomethionine, a well-absorbed form of selenium, which is part of the enzymes that activate thyroid hormone and protect the gland.
- Zinc Picolinate from Thorne provides a well-absorbed form of zinc, a cofactor for making and converting thyroid hormones.
- Vitamin D + K2 Liquid from Thorne provides vitamin D, which immune, muscle and bone cells all rely on, together with vitamin K2, which helps direct calcium into bone.
- Ovasitol from Theralogix provides myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol, and myo-inositol has been studied together with selenium for thyroid support.

How to use it thoughtfully
Please talk with your provider before starting, especially if you take medications, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition. This page does not list amounts, so follow the label or the specific guidance your provider gives you. When you can, add one product at a time so it is easier to notice how you feel. Sleep, nourishing food, daily movement and stress care are the foundation, and supplements are meant to build on them.
Take thyroid medication apart from zinc, iron, calcium and other minerals, and ask your pharmacist about the best timing. Avoid stacking selenium from several products, because more is not better with this mineral. Biotin in hair, skin and multivitamin products can throw off thyroid lab results, so mention it before lab work. Iodine is left out on purpose, and iron is only added when labs show a need. Vitamin K2 can interact with warfarin, so please check with your prescriber before starting if you take a blood thinner.
Questions to bring to your clinician
These questions can help you get the most out of your next visit.
Would checking my thyroid antibodies, selenium or vitamin D add useful information?
Could anything in the Thyroid Nutrient Support protocol interact with my current medications or supplements?
Which labs or symptoms would be worth tracking while I follow the Thyroid Nutrient Support protocol?
How long would it make sense for me to follow the Thyroid Nutrient Support protocol before we review how it is going?
What the research shows
This protocol has not been tested as a whole in a clinical trial, so the studies below cover its main ingredients.
Selenium has the most thyroid research. A 2010 meta-analysis by Toulis and colleagues looked at blinded trials in people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis who were already on levothyroxine. After three months of selenium, thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies were significantly lower, and people were more likely to report better mood or well-being. Thyroid function and dose needs were not clearly changed, and the authors said more evidence is needed before routine use.
Zinc is needed to make and convert thyroid hormone, but direct thyroid trials are limited. The best human data on zinc status come from studies like Prasad and colleagues in 1996, which showed that restricting zinc in healthy men lowered testosterone and that replacing it in men with marginal zinc status raised it, illustrating how much hormone pathways depend on adequate zinc. That study did not measure thyroid hormones, so it is indirect evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Is this protocol a replacement for thyroid medication?
No, it supports the nutrients your thyroid relies on and is meant to work alongside any medication and lab monitoring from your provider.
Why is iron not included?
Iron matters for thyroid hormone production, but too much can cause problems, so I only add it when labs show that it is low.
