Quick answer: The liver gets most of the attention, but your intestines, kidneys, skin, lungs and lymphatic system all help eliminate waste. The gut excretes compounds in bile and stool, the kidneys filter blood into urine, the lungs exhale gases, the skin releases small amounts through sweat, and the lymphatic system carries waste and immune cells. Fiber, water, movement and nutrients support them all.
Key takeaways
The liver gets most of the attention, but the gut, kidneys, skin, lungs and lymphatic system all help the body clear waste.
Fiber, water and steady bowel habits support the gut and kidneys, while clean air and avoiding smoke matter for the lungs.
Movement keeps lymph flowing, which is one reason daily activity is part of supporting these clearance routes.
Intestines
The gut eliminates compounds the liver sends in bile. Fiber binds them, and gut microbes help process some. Nutrients: fiber, probiotics and prebiotics. See the gut microbiome.
Kidneys
The kidneys filter blood and excrete water-soluble waste in urine. Hydration, plus adequate potassium and magnesium from food, supports them. See kidney function support.
Skin
The skin releases small amounts of some compounds in sweat. Hydration, zinc and vitamin C support skin health.
Lungs
The lungs exhale carbon dioxide and volatile compounds. Avoiding smoke and air pollution, plus vitamin C and omega-3s, support lung health.
Lymphatic system
Lymph vessels carry waste and immune cells. Movement helps keep lymph flowing; protein supports lymph vessels and immune cells. See the glymphatic-lymphatic axis.
Healthy aging lens
Kidney filtration and lung function naturally decline with age. Protecting these organs with hydration, movement and fewer exposures supports healthy aging. Start with how liver clearance works.
When to see a naturopathic doctor
It may be time to see a naturopathic doctor if you have ongoing fatigue, headaches, skin or digestive symptoms, or known exposure to lead, mercury, mold or workplace chemicals. The same is true if you take medications or have liver, kidney or heart conditions and want to try an elimination-support plan, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (intensive cleansing protocols are not recommended).
See a medical provider promptly for signs of poisoning such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, confusion, seizures or trouble breathing, or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
What the research shows
The intestines help clear excess cholesterol, and fiber supports this. A 1999 meta-analysis by Brown and colleagues pooled 67 controlled trials of soluble fiber from oats, psyllium, pectin and guar. Each gram of soluble fiber lowered LDL cholesterol by a small amount, so about 3 grams a day from oats (roughly three servings of oatmeal) lowered total and LDL cholesterol by about 0.13 mmol/L (about 5 mg/dL). The effect is real but modest within normal intakes.
Diet can also change how the body clears pollutants. In a 2014 randomized trial by Egner and colleagues, 291 adults in a polluted region of China drank a broccoli sprout beverage or a placebo daily for 12 weeks, and the urine showed 61% more of a benzene breakdown product and 23% more of an acrolein product with the broccoli drink. This shows the kidneys and liver working together to excrete pollutants, but it did not measure health outcomes, and there are few human studies on the skin, lungs or lymph in this role.

Questions to bring to your clinician
These questions can help you get the most out of your next visit.
Which of these clearance routes is most worth supporting for me right now?
Which labs or assessments would help us understand my body’s natural clearance pathways in my case?
Which daily habits are most likely to make a difference for my body’s natural clearance pathways for me?
How long would it be reasonable to try these steps for my body’s natural clearance pathways before we review them together?

Frequently asked questions
Which organs clear waste from the body?
The liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, skin and lymphatic system.
Does sweating help the body eliminate waste?
Sweat removes small amounts of some compounds; the liver and kidneys do most of the work.
How does fiber help elimination?
It binds compounds in the gut so they leave in stool.
How can I support my lymphatic system?
Move regularly and stay hydrated.
