Many of the people who reach out to Move Forward Natural Health ask whether they can use their health savings account or flexible spending account for their visits. We are a self-pay practice, and we want to make it as simple as possible for you to use the benefits you already have. This page explains how these accounts generally work, so that you can have an informed conversation with your own plan.

Your HSA or FSA may be eligible

Health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) can generally be used for medical care from a licensed practitioner when that care relates to a specific medical condition. Dr. Ryan Kneessi is a licensed naturopathic doctor in Maryland, so visits with him may be eligible. Every plan sets its own rules, however, and general wellness services are usually not eligible. Before you use your account, we kindly ask that you check with your plan administrator about how your plan handles naturopathic visits.

Our office invoices can be paid by card. Many HSA and FSA cards work like regular debit cards, but please ask your plan administrator whether your HSA or FSA card can be used for your visit before you rely on it.

Supplements and labs through Fullscript

Fullscript, the online dispensary we use, accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout for supplements. Whether supplements qualify depends on your own plan, so please check with your plan administrator before you order. Lab orders placed through Fullscript are cash-pay only and cannot be reimbursed through superbills.

Itemized receipts are available

After each visit, we are happy to provide an itemized receipt that lists the date of service, a description of the services, the amount paid, and Dr. Kneessi’s credentials and license number. Your plan administrator may ask for this receipt to confirm that an expense qualifies, so we encourage you to keep a copy for your records.

A friendly reminder about FSA deadlines

Many FSA plans have a use-it-or-lose-it deadline at the end of the plan year, so check with your plan administrator for your exact date. Some plans offer a short grace period or let you carry over a small balance. If you have funds remaining this year, a visit before your deadline may be a good way to use them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my HSA or FSA card to pay for my visit?

Our office invoices can be paid by card, and many HSA and FSA cards work like regular debit cards. Whether a visit qualifies depends on your plan, so please ask your plan administrator first whether your card can be used for visits with a licensed naturopathic doctor.

Will my plan administrator accept a visit with a naturopathic doctor?

Visits with a licensed practitioner for a specific medical condition may be eligible, while general wellness services usually are not. Your plan administrator is the best source for a definite answer.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for supplements from Fullscript?

Fullscript accepts HSA and FSA cards at checkout for supplements, but whether supplements qualify depends on your own plan, so please check with your plan administrator first. Lab orders placed through Fullscript are cash-pay only and cannot be reimbursed through superbills.

Can you give me a receipt for my records?

Of course. We provide an itemized receipt after each visit with the date, a description of the services, the amount paid, and Dr. Kneessi’s credentials and license number.

When do my FSA funds expire?

Many FSA plans have a use-it-or-lose-it deadline at the end of the plan year, which for many plans is December 31, and some offer a grace period or a small carryover. Your plan’s own documents or administrator will have your exact dates.
