Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body, in response to a lack of available glucose for energy, begins breaking down stored fats into molecules called ketones to use as fuel. This typically occurs when carbohydrate intake is drastically reduced, such as on a ketogenic diet, or after a prolonged period of fasting.

During an intermittent fast, especially a longer one, it’s possible for the body to enter a mild state of ketosis because you’re going without consuming any new glucose for an extended period of time. However, the degree to which this occurs can vary greatly from person to person and may depend on factors like your individual metabolic rate, your activity level, and the duration of your fasting window.

If, during your eating window, you’re consuming a diet high in carbohydrates, your body may never fully transition into ketosis. The body will use the readily available glucose from the carbs for energy and replenish its glycogen stores, which it will then use for energy once you begin your next fasting window.
