Intestinal Epithelial Cells

The intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) play a critical role in the maintenance of gut barrier function. Immune function

Intestinal epithelial cells also play an important role in the immune system. These cells produce and secrete various antimicrobial peptides, which help to defend against invading pathogens. They also communicate with the underlying immune cells, such as dendritic cells and macrophages, to maintain immune homeostasis in the gut.

Secretory function

Intestinal epithelial cells are also involved in the secretion of mucus and other factors that help to lubricate and protect the gut lining. Mucus is produced by goblet cells, which are a type of specialized epithelial cell.
